At the age of fourteen, <em>Gus <\/em>was struck with polio. As those who knew him can attest, he did not let this condition encumber him, ever using his engineers mind to create solutions to any mobility issues he faced.\u00a0 <em>Gus <\/em>graduated as a University of Kansas Jayhawk in 1948, going on to work for the next 30 years for <strong>General Motors<\/strong> and <strong>Detroit-Diesel Allison<\/strong> (<strong>Rolls Royce<\/strong> Indianapolis). In 1958 he did the standard venturi meter in series with the nozzle.\u00a0 The break through &#8220;Wheatstone bridge&#8221; used in calibrating thermocouples. In early 1961 or 62 <em>Gus<\/em> was asked to develop a T56 thermo-couple calibration rig.\u00a0 The build experience of the T56 venturi rig taught him where the measurement problems were given 1963 technology. To calibrate the air cooled thermocouples stationed at combustion chamber exhaust, <em>Gus<\/em> used a <em>Wheatstone bridge<\/em> for the thermocouples and a pneumatic version of a <em>Wheatstone bridge<\/em> for the thermocouple cooling air.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e6d1983\" data-id=\"e6d1983\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-38892d9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"38892d9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-684 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/flemingairflow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/August-Fleming-2-e1692125614473-300x280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flemingairflow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/August-Fleming-2-e1692125614473-300x280.jpg 300w, https:\/\/flemingairflow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/August-Fleming-2-e1692125614473-374x350.jpg 374w, https:\/\/flemingairflow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/August-Fleming-2-e1692125614473-150x140.jpg 150w, https:\/\/flemingairflow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/August-Fleming-2-e1692125614473.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p><div style=\"text-align: left;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">It was during his work at<\/span><strong><i><span lang=\"EN-US\"> Allison Gas Turbine <\/span><\/i><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">(now\u00a0<\/span><strong><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">Rolls Royce<\/span><\/i><\/strong><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">) <\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\">that he became<\/span><i> <\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\">the premiere <\/span><i><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\">in\u00a0 <\/span><i><span lang=\"EN-US\"><em>Dynamic Airflow Measurement techniques<\/em><\/span><\/i><i><span lang=\"EN-US\">. <\/span><\/i><em>Gus<\/em> built many types of measurement machines for <strong>Allison <em>Gas Turbines<\/em><\/strong>. During machine development, <em>Gus<\/em> would listen to the sounds, watch the gauges and determine what components needed improvement. He would study their design and improve them to suit the need.\u00a0 He often told the &#8220;Manufacturer&#8221; how to improve their product.\u00a0 This Fleming technique employing the <em>Wheatstone bridge concept<\/em> in pneumatics allowed the <strong><em>Allison<\/em><\/strong> 250 1st stage nozzle to have a 0.7% total tolerance.\u00a0<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6c8be84 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6c8be84\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3176201\" data-id=\"3176201\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5a02fb5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5a02fb5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>His entry into the field of <em>Aerodynamic measurement<\/em> came in the late 1950\u2019s when an unexpected problem arose that could not be solved by conventional means. It was found that a gas turbine nozzle warped so badly during engine testing that the traditional mechanical testing tools used to measure and adjust the nozzle would no longer fit onto the part. Such testing and adjustment is aerodynamic area of the nozzle, and other such gas turbine components. Such testing and adjustment is critical to insure proper engine performance, and until his time all measurement was done mechanically. So <em>Gus Fleming<\/em> developed a <em>new, dynamic airflow process<\/em> to determine the aerodynamic area of the nozzles, and such gas turbine components. The improvement in the <em>Accuracy <\/em>and <em>Efficiency<\/em> (speed of testing) obtained by using <em>Gus<\/em> Fleming\u2019s <em>dynamic process<\/em> was so great that test procedures on gas turbine components were changed to take full advantage of this methodology and led to the development of the\u00a0<em>AF-16 Test Bed<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>AF-36 Airflow Measurement System<\/em>, as well as various <em>Adaptors<\/em> to allow a variety of gas turbine components to be tested on the Systems. Two of these machines designed in 1965 continue to be the fastest <em>Airflow Measurement Systems<\/em> in the world. He enjoyed classical music, discussions about democra-cy, aviation, and wind-energy, was a private pilot and was true to his Swedish roots. After his retirement in 1992<strong>, Gus\u2019s son Ronald J. Fleming <\/strong>took over the company and continues the family business with<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Fleming &amp; Associates Calibration, Inc<\/strong>. The company has continued to refine and sell its products all over the world. The main product of the company is the <strong>AF-36<\/strong> <em>Airflow Measurement System<\/em>.\u00a0 It has been continually refined since the time of its design and is today the state of the art in Aerodynamic measurement of gas turbine components. <em>The <\/em>aerodynamic methodology for test procedures, accuracy of measuring and reliability of <em><strong>Fleming<\/strong><\/em> <em>Airflow Measurement System<\/em> provides safe and high quality gas turbine components for engine aircraft. <em>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-7b53a13 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"7b53a13\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d13df95\" data-id=\"d13df95\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19eeb8d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"19eeb8d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">Fleming &amp; Associates Calibration, Inc<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0now has\u00a0<em>AF-36 Airflow Measurement Systems<\/em> in over 120 facilities worldwide. Its customer base includes almost every entry into the gas turbine field.
